Also known as
Erectile Dysfunction Inventory of Treatment Satisfaction, EDITS questionnaire, Patient EDITS, Partner EDITS
Definition
EDITS (Erectile Dysfunction Inventory of Treatment Satisfaction) is a validated psychometrically sound questionnaire designed to assess patient and partner satisfaction with medical treatments for erectile dysfunction.1 Developed by Althof et al. in 1999, it consists of an 11-item patient version (Patient EDITS) and a 5-item partner version (Partner EDITS), both utilizing a 5-point Likert scale.1 The questionnaire measures subjective evaluation of treatment received, focusing on aspects such as overall satisfaction, treatment expectations, ease of use, confidence, and impact on relationships.1,2
The EDITS questionnaire produces an index score ranging from 0 (extremely low treatment satisfaction) to 100 (extremely high treatment satisfaction), making it easy to interpret and compare results across different treatments or patient populations.3 The instrument has demonstrated high internal consistency (0.90 for Patient EDITS and 0.76 for Partner EDITS) and excellent test-retest reliability (0.98 for Patient EDITS and 0.83 for Partner EDITS).1
Clinical Context
EDITS is widely used in clinical settings to evaluate patient and partner satisfaction with various erectile dysfunction treatments, including oral medications (e.g., PDE5 inhibitors like sildenafil, tadalafil), vacuum devices, injections, and other therapeutic approaches.1,3 The questionnaire helps clinicians understand subjective treatment outcomes beyond physiological measures of erectile function, recognizing that treatment satisfaction differs from treatment efficacy as it focuses on a person’s subjective evaluation of treatment received.1
The Patient EDITS consists of 11 items that assess various aspects of treatment satisfaction, including:1,2
- Overall satisfaction with treatment
- Degree to which treatment met expectations
- How close to being an ideal treatment
- How likely to continue using treatment
- How likely to recommend treatment to a friend
- How easy to use treatment
- How physically comfortable to use treatment
- How much interference with sexual activity
- How satisfied with how quickly treatment works
- How satisfied with how long treatment lasts
- How treatment affected sense of masculinity/confidence
The Partner EDITS includes 5 items focusing on partner perspectives of treatment satisfaction:1
- Overall satisfaction with treatment
- Degree to which treatment met expectations
- How close to being an ideal treatment
- How likely to recommend treatment to a friend
- How much interference with sexual activity
EDITS is administered to patients with erectile dysfunction who are receiving or have received treatment. It is typically used in clinical trials, comparative studies of different ED treatments, and routine clinical practice to monitor treatment outcomes and guide clinical decision-making.2,3,4 The questionnaire takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and has been translated into 23 languages, making it a globally applicable tool for assessing treatment satisfaction.
Research has established that a clinically important difference (CID) on the EDITS index score is approximately 10 points (95% CI, 8.5-10.4), corresponding to a medium effect size.2 This benchmark aids in interpreting the clinical relevance of differences in mean EDITS index scores between treatments for patients with erectile dysfunction.2
