Definition
Tubing malfunction, particularly in the context of inflatable penile prostheses (IPP), refers to mechanical failures within the tubing system that connects the components of the device. These failures often manifest as fluid leakage from tubing fractures or cylinder tears, leading to the inability of the device to inflate or deflate properly. Inflatable penile prostheses consist of a reservoir, a pump, and cylinders, all interconnected by tubing through which fluid is transferred to achieve an erection.¹
Clinical Context
Mechanical failure of inflatable penile prostheses, including tubing malfunction, is a significant concern, accounting for nearly 50% of all IPP revision surgeries. Tubing fractures are a common cause of such malfunctions. These devices are used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in patients who do not respond to or are not candidates for less invasive treatments. While IPPs offer high satisfaction rates, their multi-component design carries a risk of mechanical failure. Revision surgeries due to malfunction are associated with increased risks, particularly infection. The decision to perform a partial or complete revision depends on the specific component failure and the associated risks.²
